23-24 Week of 9/25 – 9/29

This week Junior Milo Austin completed his first CNC Router project. He saw a need for the shop to have a tool for organizing our brooms, so he went about creating a broom rack. Here is what he says on his blog:

This week from Tuesday to Thursday I was working on getting my broom holder project cut out and finished. I started by cutting out all the pieces on the CNC router. There were a few hiccups’ during this step but I was able to fix them. Next I had to cut off the tabs from the pieces. This step showed me that if I was doing this project again I would definitely chose pocket cuts instead of tabs since there is a cleaner look to them, and less sanding involved. After removing the tabs I sanded all the pieces. after sanding it was finally time to stain so I chose my desired color and recruited my classmate Anthony Cartolano so that it would be finished faster. Then all that was left to do was laser engrave my name onto the top and fill it with the brooms.

Often in the shop, students take over projects from graduates. Senior Nate Hopper has decided to continue a project started last year by alumni Josh Pahang. The project is a complex LED Chess Board. Read more about it on Nate’s website linked here.

The sophomores continued learning CAD during the week, with a focus on hand drawing plans and sections.
