Mr. L Shop Smarts #013

Some of you may have heard about GridFinity. It’s a 3D printed organization system that can be completely customized. It was created by Zack Freedman and is Open Source. It has been integrated into Autodesk Fusion so creating custom bins to hold tools and hardware is very easy. What continues to be more difficult is making outlines for custom bins to hold tools. While there are many ready made options available on 3D Model websites such as Thangs or MakerWorld, sometimes you need to make something completely new. This can be cumbersome and time consuming.

I came across the video below that uses AI to help trace complex tools so they can easily be brought into Fusion. The first step is to take a crisp photo of the object on a white or black background. Place a known scaled object in the photo. A rectangle, as used in this video, works very well as you can scale both sides accurately. Then using an AI tool such as Gemini, ask to have the image reproduced as a 2 tone image. AI does this in just a few seconds, and then the image can be turned into a .SVG file and imported into Fusion. It’s really simple, and makes the process much faster.

There are probably many other uses for using AI to trace certain items. Any thoughts?

Well, that’s all for this week. Thank you for not reading this.
