25-26 Week of 9/15-9/19

This week in Engineering, students balanced project design with essential shop organization and maintenance tasks. Their work showed the importance of both refining technical details in individual projects and keeping the shop environment running smoothly for everyone.

Jaspreet focused her time on a mix of design feedback and organizational work. Since Bella is currently leading the CAD design for the Word Clock, Jaspreet shifted her attention to other aspects of the project. She met with Mr. L to review the design and noted his suggestion to use brackets instead of tabs to connect the clock’s walls, a change that would give the structure a cleaner, more professional look. Beyond the project, she took on larger responsibilities in the shop itself, reorganizing the new standards into a clear spreadsheet to help track what the program needs to meet. She also worked on planning where to hang the newly delivered shop signs, thinking carefully about whether each one should be mounted on a wall, ceiling, or attached to wood so that they fit naturally in different spaces.

Lila, meanwhile, split her week between project work and machine maintenance. She began constructing the “shell” for her drawer organizer, which will eventually hold a series of drawers. While designing, she accounted for uneven screws on the surface where the organizer will sit, cleverly adding divots into her design to keep the finished piece level. At the same time, Lila contributed to the upkeep of the Tormach Mills. She helped clean out the old coolant, scrubbed the collection bin, rewired parts of the system, and ensured that things were drying properly. Although some systems are working again, she noted that the mills will still need a final inspection by Sydney or the manufacturer to make sure there are no lingering issues.

Our Sophomores are beginning the year with the mandatory OSHA 10 certification training. It’s a tedious amount of work, but learning about safety is the best introduction to shop work.

That’s all for this week, thanks for reading.
