24-25 Week of 10/7 – 10/11

A solid week of work from our students this week. Let’s go ahead and get to it.

Senior Harlan Doeg continued working on the stubborn electronics for his hand project. He says on his blog:

I swapped out the NRF24s for different versions, I followed online advice, and yet despite that none of what I did worked. the NRF24s just continued to be nonfunctional.

Eventually I gave up with the NRF24s, as it seems that they have broken entirely even for other people, I swapped to the newer, higher quality RFM69s on Wednesday. I spent most of Wednesday researching and soldering the RFM69s.

On Thursday I soldered in the antenna to the RFM69, before testing it out with a new code library provided by the adafruit tutorial which seems to be working perfectly. I then spent the rest of the day figuring out how the code actually work so that I can begin reworking my own code to use the new code properly.

Junior Jaspreet Kaur has been working with controlling LEDs via a infrared controller. She writes on her blog:

This week I finally completed filling all of the remote’s buttons with unique commands. With Mr. Christy’s help, I was able to fix the command that cycles through all of the colors in the rainbow. The loop I used initially to create the gradient had one for loop that counted up the number of pixels and another that cycled through the elements of the array. This caused a problem when I pressed the button to turn the command on. I had intended for the colors to loop continuously until another button was pressed. However, with the two for loops, the colors would only cycle through twice. After altering it and using an if statement, I ran into another problem. This time, the cycle would stop just after two colors presented themselves. Finally, I fixed this so that the colors cycled forever until I pressed a different button. Since I have now finalized the code, I have began working on customizing the remote. I want the buttons on the remote to show the colors that each button corresponds to, so I started to design a sticker that would go on top of the remote. I hope to get this sticker printed out by the Graphic Design shop after I finish designing it.

The sophomore class finished their hand drawing unit and finished the week in the machine shop cutting stock for their upcoming milling project. Mr. Christy took some photos of the sophomore class, which you can find below.

All for now!
