This week we welcomed parents into the classroom for Curriculum Night. I was fortunate enough to sit down with several parents from our Sophomore class and provide them with information about the Engineering & Robotics program. Thank you to all who were able to come out and learn more about the shop!
We start with senior Milo Austin this week. He writes on his website:
This week I started by finishing up the milling processes on my lamp base. What I had left to do was the drilling operations for the screws that hold the clamp together and for the light bulb socket. For both the drills I had to go back to my g-code file and change the drilling operations to pecking. pecking is when the drill moves up after it goes down to let debris out so they don’t clog and damage the drill bit.
After I finished milling the clamp I went onto following up with another project that I took on from last year, the Fish Feeder. First I cut out a new sensor disk and a new front plate for the fish feeder. The sensor disk that was there had broke since last year and the front panel needed altering. Now that I have done these two things I can move on and assemble the rest of the Fish Feeder.
See photos of his project at his website, linked here.
Junior Oliver was fabricating a PCB this week. He writes on his blog:
This week I didn’t do much besides my PCB because I had a couple problems cutting it which ended up taking me a few days, but once I got it figured out I cut it and started soldering and while I was soldering I notice that the PCB didn’t have hole for the standoffs so I had to make those with the drill press. On top of doing my PCB I went back to my code and cleaned it up by removing some unnecessary lines and a couple buggy areas with the potentiometers. Lastly I took measurements of all my components now that my PCB is done for when I make my cad model for the body.

The Sophomores continued working on circuitry guides for most of the week. They took a few detours with a lesson on 3D printing and checking out the CNC Mill while it was being run by some of our seniors.
