Only 11 days of school left! Projects are winding down a bit and the shop is beginning to start its summer cleaning phase. The shop can get pretty messy during the school year so we always like to take time and reorganize as for the upcoming year. This also gives us time to do basic maintenance on all the machines in the shop. Hard to believe we are almost at the end of the school year.
This week Junior Milo Austin nearly finished his custom guitar. He writes about his recent progress on his blog.
This week was maybe the biggest week of the whole bass guitar project. First I installed the tuning machines. To do this I used a clamp to gently press in the shaft collars and then I lined up the tuning machines with a ruler and screwed them in. After the tuning machines were on I put on the strings. This is the biggest checkpoint of the whole project since the Bass is now playable. After I installed the strings I realized that a string tree would be necessary to hold the high g string in place to I designed on and turned it using the lathe.
See photos and more on his website at this link.
The sophomores, having finished the 2 required projects for the year, are now beginning their own custom projects. They spent last week coming up with ideas. We are looking forward to seeing what they create!
The Freshmen were back coding this week. They are moving quite fast through the guides. Next week we will be doing some work in the machine shop.
